PRESENTED BY WNYC & THE APOLLO
The 17th annual Apollo Uptown Hall MLK celebration focuses on Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement of the 60’s as the template for modern social and civil justice movements. This year, we celebrate young people impacting society through activism, engagement, and a commitment to justice.
The Apollo has a decades-long tradition of serving as a convener for local community residents as well as people from across New York City. That tradition continues as the Apollo partners with WNYC in our annual celebration of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his enduring legacy on the culture. WNYC’s Notes from America host, Kai Wright moderates the first hour of this year’s celebration followed by music, spoken word and other forms of creative expressions with WQXR’s Terrance McKnight.
Following the in person program, Celebrate MLK’s National Day of Service with an inspiring panel on the Apollo Digital Stage featuring a discussion on the pivotal role of young voices affecting change within their communities, curated by the Apollo Young Producers.

WHAT TO EXPECT
A musical journey to the Middle East featuring oud virtuoso Naseer Shamma
There will be a free pre-concert lecture at 7pm for each performance
ABOUT THE CONCERT
Middle East Meditations is a milestone event in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s distinguished history. Marsalis and JLCO collaborate with revered Iraqi oud virtuoso, composer, educator, musicologist and UNESCO Artist for Peace Naseer Shamma, blending the magical flavors of the Tigris River with Mississippi River-descended swing. Friends since they met in Abu Dhabi in 2010, the two visionaries—whose first formal concert together in 2017, in Marciac, France, was reviewed as an “unprecedented fusion” between jazz and the millennia-old short-necked forerunner of the lute—will perform together for the first time at Jazz at Lincoln Center, undertaking new works arranged by Marsalis, Shamma and orchestra members. The occasion marks the first time that the JLCO has hosted and featured an Iraqi artist. Immediately following these shows in the House of Swing (and Oud), the JLCO with Special Guest Naseer Shamma will tour select cities around the United States.
Naseer Shamma appears in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Festival.

This dark comedic work depicts a Boise Hobby Lobby thrown into chaos by the arrival of a new employee sorting through a tragic past. Like Hudes, audiences can experience Hunter’s stage work alongside his unique dramatic vision on-screen: Darren Aronofsky’s film adaptation of his play The Whale, starring Brendan Fraser, is expected to be released by A24 sometime in 2022.
